
The import of sugar to Georgia is increasing. In January-September 2023, the country bought sugar worth $76,787 million, which is a record figure of the last 15 years (data on the sugar import is available on the external trade portal of the National Statistics Office of Georgia (GEOSTAT) since 2009).
The import rate has increased compared to the same period of the previous year. Particularly, in the 9th month of 2023, 113,114 tons of sugar worth $76,787 million were imported to Georgia, while in the same period of the previous year - 103,736 tons of sugar worth $59,787 million.
The list of Georgia's top five trading partners by imports in 2023 is as follows:
Brazil - $34.472 million, 54 550 tons;
The United Arab Emirates - $9.162 million, 14,000 tons;
Russia- $8.709 million, 13 851 tons;
Morocco - $8.346 million, 9 542 tons;
France - $6.060 million, 7 544 tons.
Georgia also bought sugar from India, Azerbaijan and Egypt. These are the countries from which the import value exceeded $2 million.
