The Mtkvari River Protection Day was established in 1999 in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan at the initiative of the Mtkvari-Araks Coalition.
The Georgian National Environmental Agency conducts regular monitoring of the quality of the Mtkvari River Basin at 19 points every month and at 33 points once every three months. The results of these studies are published on the website of the National Environmental Agency.
On the occasion of the Mtkvari River Protection Day, the specialists of the Agency's Atmospheric Air, Water and Soil Analysis Laboratory took water samples on the Mtkvari River. In the samples taken, physicochemical parameters were specified, while organic and inorganic contaminants and heavy metals will be tested in the Agency's laboratory, the results of which will be known in a few days. The Mtkvari is the main river of Georgia. The Mtkvari River’s basin covers northeastern Turkey, all of central and eastern Georgia, almost all of Azerbaijan, all of Armenia, and northwestern Iran. The total area of the river basin is 188 000 square kilometers and the total length is 1515 kilometers.
