Ekaterine Imedadze, a member of the National Communications Commission, and the staff of the Commission met with a representative of SpaceX, where they discussed the issue of the launch of SpaceX Starlink satellite internet service in Georgia. According to the Commission, during the introductory meeting, the parties talked to the Starlink official about the current situation and future vision in the telecommunications sector in Georgia; the prospects for the development of the digital economy in the country were also discussed. For his part, the SpaceX official briefed the commission staff on SpaceX's future plans in Georgia.
Starlink provides high-speed, low-latency broadband Internet around the world, including in the areas, where the Internet connectivity is of poor quality, expensive, low-reliable or completely inaccessible. SpaceX currently has launched more than 2,700 Starlink low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites.
In the Georgian context, Starlink is particularly important and interesting in the mountainous regions as well as in the settlements without broadband internet coverage. After the introduction of Starlink, access to the high-speed Internet in all such geographical areas will be available to anyone.
"We had a very interesting and important meeting with a representative of SpaceX, who arrived in Georgia to get acquainted with the Georgian telecommunications environment on the spot. We provided him with detailed information on the current trends and further visions of the Communications Commission in Georgia. SpaceX is currently working to explore the niches of interest to it in the Georgian market and is preparing for the commercial launch of Starlink operations in Georgia. I think this fact is a very important event for the country and the telecommunications sector, as after the introduction of Starlink, satellite internet will be available in Georgia and it will give way to the development of the following market of innovative digital services,"- Imedadze said.
