The import of Russian gas to Georgia is increasing, while that of Azerbaijan is decreasing.
In January-November 2023, compared to the same period of the previous year, the Russian gas imports increased by 64.5%, therefore, its share in total purchases increased. In particular, if the share of the Russian gas in the total import was 15.6% in January-November 2022, this indicator increased to 24.5% in 11 months of last year.
More specifically, according to the data published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (GEOSTAT), in January-November 2022, Georgia bought natural gas worth $353,645 million from Azerbaijan and Russia, of which the volume of gas purchased in Russia amounted to $55,175 million. In 11 months of 2023, gas worth $90,776 million was imported from Russia, and the total import totaled $369,833 million.
Despite the increase in imports from Russia, Azerbaijan remains the main supplier of natural gas to Georgia. As of the 11th month of 2023, it accounted for 75.4% of the total gas import ($279,057 million), although in 2022 this figure was 84.3% ($298,471 million).
