
Georgia’s parliamentary delegation, led by Chairman of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili, is actively participating in the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tashkent, the capital of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
During his address to the Assembly, Papuashvili highlighted this year’s General Debate theme, “Parliamentary Action for Social Development and Justice.”
He emphasized the critical role of parliaments in fostering societies that are just, inclusive, and progressive. Reflecting on the global challenges faced by many nations, Papuashvili noted that Georgia’s government has successfully maintained peace and stability, providing the foundation for economic and social development.
Papuashvili underscored that economic growth is not only a tool for reducing poverty and ensuring social well-being, but also essential for national security and regional peace. He elaborated on Georgia’s efforts to promote social development, with a particular focus on family support as a cornerstone of societal prosperity.
Among the key initiatives mentioned were accessible healthcare, social security programs for families, and support for large families. Additionally, he spoke about the creation of laws to promote equality, such as the Law on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination and the Concept of Equality of Men and Women. He also highlighted legislation protecting the rights of persons with disabilities.
Papuashvili outlined the core principles of a new social contract for humanity, emphasizing the need for solutions to modern global challenges. These include promoting domestic and global peace and security, fostering democratic governance, ensuring economic growth that reduces inequality, and advancing environmental sustainability. He also stressed the importance of addressing the ethical implications of emerging technologies.
