
Georgia has increased the rate of purchase of Russian natural gas by 65% this year. In 11 months of 2023, up to 490 million cubic meters of Russian gas worth $91 million entered the country's energy system.
Purchases of the Azerbaijani natural gas have decreased in terms of the amount, in the 11 months of 2023 it amounted to $279 million, while the volume of imports last year was $298 million. Quantitatively, Georgia received 2.13 billion cubic meters of the Azerbaijani natural gas, while its volume received in the same period of the previous year was 2.2 billion cubic meters.
As a result, Russia's share in natural gas consumption increased to 19%, while in 2022 it was 12%.
To be iinformed, Georgia receives the Russian natural gas through the North-South main pipeline. The Russian Gazprom supplies the natural gas to Armenia through this gas pipeline. In 2022, the load capacity of this pipeline was 2.6 billion cubic meters.
As for the South Caucasian gas pipeline, Azerbaijan supplies natural gas to Turkey and the European Union through its and Trans-Anatolian and Trans-Adriatic pipeline systems. In 2022, the load capacity of this gas pipeline was 19.8 billion cubic meters. The issue of receiving natural gas by Georgia from this pipeline is regulated by the multi-year agreement signed with the Shah-Deniz consortium.
