Nikoloz Paliani, a respected IFMGA Certified Mountain Guide and prominent figure in Georgia’s mountaineering community, has tragically passed away during an expedition on Mount Ushba in the Svaneti region.
According to Georgia’s Emergency Management Service, Paliani was part of a team of four climbers attempting to summit the notoriously difficult peak when he fell from a significant altitude.
"A search and rescue operation was immediately initiated," the agency reported. "A Border Police helicopter was dispatched from Tbilisi. Three climbers were successfully evacuated from 3,600 meters, while the body of the deceased was transported to Mestia."
The tragic news has sent shockwaves through Georgia’s outdoor and adventure sports community.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Nikoloz Paliani during his expedition to Ushba,” said Adrenaline, a local sports gear shop, in a public statement. “Nikoloz was not only an extraordinary mountaineer and guide, but also a driving force in promoting tourism in Georgia. His passing is a profound loss for his family, friends, the region of Svaneti, and the entire outdoor sports and tourism community.”
They added, “Nikoloz’s strength, courage, and deep love for the mountains will always be remembered.”
