
On the initiative of the Government of Georgia, it is planned to create protected areas in Racha region. The relevant draft law has been prepared and is being considered in the Parliament.
The main objectives of the draft law are the establishment of the Racha National Park and the creation of the multi-use area of Racha. The Racha National Park is created within the administrative boundaries of Oni municipality, the total area of which includes 50,835 hectares.
If approved, the draft law will come into effect on January 1, 2023.
The German Development Bank (KFW), and the Caucasus Nature Fund provided grant funding for the development of our protected areas. In 2023, approximately GEL 1,156,400 will be needed, of which GEL 356,400 (labor compensation) will be allocated from the state budget, and GEL 800,000 will be allocated by the donor organization. In 2024-2026, the minimum amount allocated from the state budget will be GEL 1,069,200 (labor compensation), while other necessary expenses will be financed by the donor organization.
The adoption of the bill will have a positive impact on the revenue part of the state budget, as it will contribute to the development of the tourist and recreational infrastructure and the full use of the recreational potential in Oni municipality.
