„Only 1.5% of farms in Georgia cultivate more than five hectares of land,“ - Georgia's Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy 2023 – the strategic document prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia reads.
According to the document, the share of those employed in agriculture is 19.8% of the total employment. Most of the employees in the agricultural sector work on their own farms.
73.1% of farms in Georgia cultivate up to one hectare of land, 25% - one-five hectares and only 1.5% cultivate more than five hectares of land. Land scarcity prevents the development of large-scale agricultural production and the use of economies of scale.
Compared to 2012, in 2018 the planted areas decreased by 20%. The corn planted areas decreased the most. Despite the decrease in the total volume of the crop, the yield per hectare is positive in the productivity of almost all annual crops.
