
In the first half of this year, Georgian onion export decreased by 65% annually. According to the National Statistics Office of Georgia (GEOSTAT), in the first six months of last year, onions worth $72,250 were exported from Georgia, and this year - worth only $25,620.
This year, Georgian onions have been exported to Armenia ($20,020) and Russia ($5,600). In Armenia, the export price of 1 kg onion was 34 cents, and in Russia - it was 80 cents.
It should also be noted that in the first half of last year the main export countries were Ukraine and Moldova, this year the Georgian onion has not been exported to Ukraine and Moldova. For example, in January-June last year, the country exported onions worth $45 thousand to Ukraine, and worth $11,870 dollars - to Moldova.
As for the imports, it decreased by 27% annually during the reporting period. Last year, onions worth $6.5 million were imported within six months, and this year, they have been worth $4.7 million. Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Russia have the largest share of onion imports this year. In the first half of 2024, the imports from these countries look like this:
Kazakhstan - 5 487 tons worth $1.465 million;
Azerbaijan - 6,001 tons worth $1.423 million;
Russia - 4 173 tons worth $1.225 million.
Besides, onions worth only $16,840 were imported from Kazakhstan last year, and this year it has become the main supplier of onions. Kazakhstan replaced Russia, which ranked 1st in January-June last year. In particular, onions worth $2.294 million were imported from Russia during this period, which means that onion import from Russia has almost halved this year.
