Number of Georgians seeking EU asylum increased by 68%

As the latest report of the European Union Agency for Asylum shows, Georgian citizens have submitted 14,970 asylum requests to European Union member states and Schengen Area countries, an increase of 68 percent compared to 2021.
The breakdown of the number of Georgian nationals seeking asylum in the EU and Schengen Area countries over the recent years looks as follows:
2016 – 8,775
2017 – 12,060
2018 – 20,950
2019 - 22,765
2020 – 8,905
2021 – 14,970
The annual report of the EUAA also showed Georgians had submitted the highest number (37%) of asylum applications to France.
Totally, 10,590 first-time asylum seekers from Georgia were denied the request by EU authorities last year.
