According to official figures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, 38 people received humanitarian status in October-December, most of them, 10, were Syrian and 9 Afghan. During the same period, 5 citizens of Iraq and 4 citizens of Ukraine were granted humanitarian status. In the second quarter (April-June), a total of 5 people were granted humanitarian status, while in the first quarter (January-March) 11 people were granted humanitarian status.
Statistics of asylum seekers have also increased in this period - according to the data of the fourth quarter of 2021, 232 asylum seekers are registered in Georgia, which is 59 more than in the previous three months. Asylum seekers include 45 citizens of Iran, 35 citizens of Turkey and 7 citizens of Afghanistan.
As for the persons granted refugee status, 14 people received the status in the last quarter of last year, which is 9 more than the data of the previous quarter. Among them are citizens of Iran, Lebanon and Syria.
Within the last three months of 2021, 114 citizens of different countries (Turkey - 13, Egypt - 11, Pakistan - 11, etc.) were denied refugee or humanitarian status.
To be informed, a refugee status shall be granted to a person who is not a citizen of Georgia or to a stateless person permanently residing in Georgia, or to a person who is in Georgia and has a reasonable fear that he/she may become a victim of persecution on the basis of race, religion, denomination, ethnicity, or for belonging to a particular social group, or for political opinions, and, because of such fear, can not or does not want to return to his/her country of origin or to enjoy the protection of such country.
Humanitarian status shall be granted to a person who is not a citizen of Georgia, or is a stateless person permanently residing in Georgia, who fails to meet the conditions for granting refugee status and meets any of the following: was forced to leave his country of origin due to violence, external aggression, occupation, internal conflicts, mass violations of human rights or significant violations of public order; may not be forcibly returned to the country of origin and may not travel to another country for legal reasons, in particular the international responsibilities undertaken by Georgia; may face serious life threatening conditions and/or a violation of his/her rights if he/she returns to the country of origin.
