“Election results are the cumulative verdict on a politician’s record over four years. When you subordinate your own citizens’ interests to a war agenda and the priorities of external actors, you should hardly be astonished by these kinds of results at the ballot box,” declared MP Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the European Integration Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, commenting on the recent state elections in Germany and statements made by Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Makhashvili emphasised that the German electorate’s verdict was unmistakable: voters have rejected a war-oriented agenda.

“The results demonstrated with absolute clarity that citizens across the federal states do not want a war agenda. They do not want endless global or geopolitical mobilisation. Their choice was unequivocal. For years, they have been demanding decent employment, quality jobs, peace, stability, strict border controls, and public order. Instead, they were delivered the exact opposite.

Therefore, the German Chancellor should not be surprised by the election outcome. He may well be displeased with the results; that is understandable, but the reality remains what it is.

I would ordinarily refrain from commenting on German domestic elections, but over recent years we have endured a relentless stream of unfair, and defamatory criticism directed at the Georgian government. Why? Simply because the Georgian government was safeguarding its own country at the explicit instruction and mandate of its populace. It was shielding society from being dragged into war, securing its borders, maintaining public order, and protecting citizens from uncontrolled migration.

The Georgian public made its clear choice in the 2024 parliamentary elections and again in the 2025 local elections. The choices made by the German public, in response to what I consider flawed domestic and foreign policies, are now equally evident,” Makhashvili concluded.

According to preliminary results, Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured 38.2% of the vote in the regional elections in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, while Friedrich Merz’s party failed to clear the 5% electoral threshold, garnering just 4.9%.
