“March 21st marks the International Day of Forests. Forests are a natural resource of Georgia, which occupies 42% of the country's territory,” - said in a statement issued by the National Forestry Agency of Georgia. Reportedly, in 2021 the Agency prepared 16 projects and took forest maintenance and restoration measures on an area of 444 hectares in Guria, Imereti, Kvemo Kartli, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti and Racha-Lechkhumi-Kvemo Svaneti regions; also, restoration works of oak forest (Sagoria forest) on an area of 272 hectares near Kutaisi continued.
"It should be noted that within the framework of the commitments taken under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, according to "Georgia's 2030 Climate Strategy", the country should ensure the restoration of degraded forests on more than 4,000 hectares by 2030. The National Forestry Agency implements forest restoration measures taking into account this target.
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests in 1971," - the statement reads.
