
Live pigs are imported into the country from two countries, Russia and Denmark, but still the largest amount is brought from Russia. The National Statistics Office of Georgia (GEOSTAT) reports that Russia's share in total imports was 99.8% in January-September.
In 9 months of the curent year, live pig imports from Russia and Denmark look as follows:
• Russia - 14,869 tons worth $22.65 million (99.8%);
• Denmark - 24.47 tons of $306 thousand (0.2%).
It’s worth mentioning that the import of live pigs from Russia has hit the historic high in the last 10 years (January-September). Pigs imports from Russia have been soaring in the last three years.
The data for January-September 2021-2024 is as follows:
• 2021 - 2,775 tons worth 4.78 million US dollars;
• 2022 - 7,796 tons worth 14.04 million US dollars;
• 2023 - 12,526 tons worth 18.69 million US dollars;
• 2024 - 4,869 tons worth 22.65 million US dollars.
It should be noted that the products were imported mainly from Russia in the previous years. At the same time, live pigs were imported in small quantities from Belarus, Ukraine and Bulgaria. This year, Georgia bought live pigs only from Russia and Denmark.
