This year the hazelnut crop in Georgia is declining. The crop forecast will be officially announced at the end of June, although some assumptions already exist, which are not so reliable. According to Giorgi Todua, the Head of the Georgian Hazelnut Growers Association, this year's harvest is expected to be reduced from 5,000 to 10,000 tons.
"Quantitatively, the high yielding is observed, but we will not have an abundant harvest like last year. At first glance, we can assume that the hazelnut quantity will be 60 000-65 000 tons; we can speak more boldly at the end of the month. In 2021, this figure was 75,000 tons. Now the main thing is to focus on the quality of hazelnuts, for this the treatment must be carried out in compliance with all standards and farmers must be involved in agricultural activities en masse. Unfortunately, so far, no such activity has been observed, which is largely due to the price of hazelnuts," - Todua said.
According to him, compared to 2021, hazelnuts are cheaper by about 35%. However, those farmers, who had a quality harvest were able to sell it for GEL 8 per season.
To be informed, in 2021, revenues received from hazelnut exports (24 thousand tons) amounted to 115 million US dollars, most of the exported hazelnuts go (69%) to the markets of the EU countries, such as Italy, Germany, Spain, Czech Republic, France and others.
