In January-July 2023, the import of wheat and meslin to Georgia increased. According to official statistics, 93,028 tons of wheat worth $26 million 571 thousand entered the country.
It should be noted that the export of wheat decreased last year. The reason was the export duty on wheat in the main import market - Russia, which made the import of grain of this denomination unprofitable compared to flour (7 months of 2022 - 19.1 million dollars, 55 550 tons). This year, at the request of grain producers and local processors, the government of Georgia imposed a temporary tax on flour imports from June, which helped to increase wheat imports and the operation of local mills.
According to the data published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (GEOSTAT), Georgia's top trading partners by wheat imports is traditionally Russia this year as well, from which 91,543 tons of wheat worth $26 million were imported. As a result, the import volume increased by 89.6% annually.
According to the data of 7 months, the second trading partner by wheat imports is Ukraine. The volume of wheat purchased from this market is small and amounted to 1,484 tons, the value of which was $515,000.
During this period, we also bought a small amount of wheat from Germany and Austria.
As for flour imports, the value of flour imported in January-July decreased by 25.6%, although the volumes remained almost the same. The decrease was only 0.9%. This means that flour has become cheaper in the import market compared to 7 months of last year.
In January-July, Georgia purchased 93,434 tons worth $26 million 065 thousand from the northern neighboring country. The volume of imported Russian flour decreased by 1.2% during this period.
The countries from which flour was imported are as follows: Turkey ($464 thousand, 687 tons). Italy ($126 thousand, 115 tons), Ukraine ($112 thousand, 192 tons), Belarus ($71 thousand, 201 tons), France ($43 thousand, 33 tons), Lithuania ($38 thousand, 100 tons) and Austria (37 thousand, 40 tons).
