In 2023, Georgia received $18.5 million from blueberry exports. This is stated in a report published by Galt & Taggart.
According to the same information, blueberry orchards in Georgia yield 14.5 tons per hectare, which puts the country in the 7th place globally.
Galt & Taggart says that given the full utilization of the existing orchards, blueberry production will increase to 25 million kg by 2027 (from 4 million kg in 2023).
Georgia started blueberry production in 2019 thanks to increased support from the government and donors to this industry. The total area of blueberry orchards in Georgia exceeded 2,000 ha by the end of 2022. As a result, the harvest increased 8.5 times in 2019-23 from 0.5 million kg to 4.0 million kg.
"Revenues received from blueberry exports have doubled annually and reached 18.5 million USD in 2023. Quantitatively, blueberry exports amounted to 3.0 million kg in 2023, and the average export price per kg was 6.1 USD. Russia is the main export market for Georgia with a share of more than 90%, although alternative markets are also being actively exploited. For example, in June 2023, exports were made to Germany, the Netherlands and Poland. In our opinion, these markets are attractive given the demand and price in June-July (which are Georgia's expert months)," - Galt & Taggart said.
