
During the last year - 2022, Georgia bought 15 thousand tons more salt. According to official statistics, Georgia spent 6 million 134 thousand US Dollars for 69 810 tons of salt.
Compared to the data of 2021, imports by value increased by 31.1%, and by volume - 29%.
According to the data published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (GEOSTAT), last year's salt import was a record for the last ten years.
During the reporting period, Georgia purchased the largest amount of salt from Turkey. The ranking of the TOP-3 importing countries according to the value is as follows:
1. Turkey - $2.5 million, 36,070 tons;
2. Iran - $1.5 million, 21 959 tons;
3. Azerbaijan - $1 million, 7 407 tons.
In addition to these countries, salt was imported from Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Greece, Turkmenistan, the Netherlands, Portugal, Pakistan, Russia, Armenia and other countries in small quantities.
To be reminded, according to Silvio Domente, a representative of the World Health Organization in Georgia, the consumption of salt in Georgia, especially among men, is very high, which is twice the dose recommended by the World Health Organization.
