The Competition Agency of Georgia has published an interim report on monitoring the blueberry market.
The monitoring carried out by the agency includes - from the point of view of competition, the study of the general situation in the goods and services markets of Georgia. Among them, in the relevant market - the analysis of the main factors, the existing barriers and the evaluation of the competitive environment.
The agency started monitoring the blueberry market on June 30, 2023 in order to evaluate the difficulties of selling products by farmers and the competitive environment in the market. In 2020-2023, about 50 companies exported blueberries from Georgia, mainly, to the Russian Federation (more than 90% of total exports). In 2020-2022, the export level of the market is low-concentrated, and in 2023, the index increases to the mark of a moderately concentrated market.
The amount of blueberries exported from the country is increasing. In particular, in 2020, the total volume of exports amounted to 654.9 tons, and in 2023, a 500% increase was recorded - 3412.8 tons. Along with the quantitative indicator, the total value of the exported blueberries has also increased. Particularly, in 2020, blueberries worth GEL 11.3 million were exported, in 2021 - GEL17.5 million, in 2022 - GEL 23.8 million, and in 2023 the total export value was GEL 53.9 million (475% increase).
The total share of 5 large companies at the export level of the market during the study period ranges from 43% to 65%. No fixed dominant economic agent is seen in the market, and also, one of the necessary conditions for the existence of group dominance in the form of market shares does not exist.
The agency continues to monitor the blueberry market, the final report of which is planned to be prepared in 2024.
