In the first quarter of 2022, the import of eggs to Georgia increased significantly. According to the National Statistical Office of Georgia, Georgia bought 614.7 tons of eggs in the 6 months of this year, which is almost 614% more than the figure of 86 tons in the last 6 months.
As for the import cost, Georgia paid 2.33 million US dollars for the import of eggs. It turns out that the average price of one ton of eggs cost 3.78 dollars this year, which is 85.3% higher than the average price of 2.04 dollars in the same period last year.
The list of the countries from which Georgia imports products is as follows:
- Turkey - 394.1 tons;
- Hungary - 157.7 tons;
- Bulgaria - 25.5 tons;
- Russia - 23.2 tons;
- The Netherlands - 14 tons.
It is worth noting that in 2020-2021, Ukraine was the second largest importer of eggs to Georgia, and in 2016-2019, it ranked 1st, although the war interrupted shipments and Georgia had to increase imports from the other countries.
The increase in product prices in the international market began after Russia's invasion of Ukraine - along with the disruption of supply chains, shortage of labor force, increase in the price of electricity and grain needed for poultry feeding, avian influenza outbreaks in the USA and France. It is likely that the increase in the price of imports in Georgia is caused by these international factors.
According to Geostat, in June of this year, prices for milk, cheese and egg subgroups increased by 19.5% compared to June of last year. In June, the annual inflation was 12.8%.
