Georgia will ban the export of wheat and barley from the country from July 4, 2022 to July 4 next year. This decision has already been made by the government. According to the Minister of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia, Otar Shamugia, given the situation in the region, in order to ensure food security, it is important to sell locally produced wheat and barley only in the domestic market.
In 2021, 2,357 tons (with the revenue of 612 thousand dollars) of barley were exported from Georgia (local export). The largest quantity was sold in Iraq - 1,195 tons (worth 337.6 thousand dollars). Turkey ranks 2nd with 733 tons (worth 169.3 thousand dollars), followed by Saudi Arabia - 159 tons (worth 40.9 thousand dollars).
As for the local wheat exports, last year the Georgian wheat was sold in 3 countries:
Armenia - 1,468 tons (worth 365.4 thousand dollars);
Turkey - 49.4 tons (worth 16.7 thousand dollars);
Ukraine - 40 tons (worth 10.8 thousand dollars).
In total, in 2021, 1,557 tons of wheat were exported from Georgia, worth a total of 393 thousand dollars.
