According to the Georgian Renewable Energy Development Association, the country has the potential to utilize 50 billion kilowatt hours in terms of hydropower separately, but today it uses only 20% of it.
As Mata Gordeziani, the project manager of the organization told “Business Partner”, in case of full utilization of renewable energy resources, Georgia will become an exporter of electricity.
"Georgia has a great resource in the field of renewable energy. In terms of hydropower separately, which also implies zero pollution, we have the potential to utilize 50 billion kilowatt hours. Currently we have used only 20% of this resource. Taking full advantage of the existing opportunities will allow us to make use of solar and wind energy, which needs a regulating station to be integrated into the system. By utilizing all these resources, the country can not only meet local, growing consumption and become energy independent, but can also become an exporting country, especially since the demand for green energy is growing day by day," - Gordeziani said.
According to Gordeziani, Georgia's energy independence has been threatened since the 90s. The main reason is the public attitudes.
"Unfortunately, for many years now, in fact, the utilization of renewable energy since the dark 90s has been a problem in Georgia and it is followed by this orchestrated campaign of black PR, which, unfortunately, has yielded results and the population has been misled. However, with those risks (energy independence on Russia) approaching, the population largely analyzes the need to utilize renewable energy. We have a very large resource and the interest of investors is still there. Therefore, the main thing is not to create problems like we have seen so far,"- said the project manager of the Georgian Renewable Energy Development Association.
