German Ambassador Peter Fischer shared on social network X that he attended a meeting at Georgia’s Anti-Corruption Bureau.
According to the Ambassador, he was promised information on how the Georgian authorities will apply the law to 13 German organizations operating in Georgia. These organizations are funded by the German federal budget and operate under bilateral agreements between Germany and Georgia.
“I was promised info on how 13 German organisations in Georgia – funded by the German federal budget, subject of Germany-Georgia bilateral treaties and essential to the practical implementation of our broad and deep Germany-Georgia ties – will be treated under Georgian FARA. We would like them to be exempt.
We also discussed the EU. I recalled the negative opinion of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe on “foreign agent” type laws. As a friend, I cautioned against illusions about Georgia’s EU integration. The EU Council has concluded – with regret – since June 2024 that Georgia is way off course,” the German Ambassador wrote.
