The Mukhuri Honey Association has applied to Sakpatenti to register a geographical indication.
"From now on, Mukhuri Honey with distinctive taste properties and aroma obtained from the nectar of flowers in Mukhuri (Khobistskali) Gorge of Chkhorotsku Municipality will be recognized at the state level," the statement reads.
Beekeeping in Chkhorotsku has a long history and traditions. Mukhuri Honey is characterized by a moderately pronounced aroma, moderately sweet, pleasant and special, characteristic taste. It is mainly collected from May to August, when honey plants bloom.
A product protected by a geographical indication must meet certain criteria in order to be recognized as a geographical indication. As noted in the statement, due to their special, distinctive features and increased demand, the price of products related to the geographical location in the market may exceed the price of similar products.
Georgia is a traditional honey producer. Several local types of honey are spread in Georgia, of which acacia honey, chestnut honey, meadow honey, etc. are noteworthy. The main advantages of Georgian honey are excellent natural environment, climate and flora, also the country’s favorable location in the Black Sea region.
