Maia Bitadze, Chairwoman of the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, met with representatives from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to discuss legislative reforms related to climate change.
During the meeting, Bitadze presented the draft climate law, developed using a new approach. She explained that the law was preceded by the creation of "green" and "white" books—consultation documents—developed in close collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture.
Bitadze emphasized that the goal of the draft law is to create a unified legal framework that will bring together currently fragmented climate-related regulations.
The discussion also underscored the need to implement a monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) system for greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the Energy Community Treaty. This system is key to preparing the country for future participation in emissions trading.
Bitadze thanked the AIIB representatives for their visit and expressed a strong interest in continuing cooperation.
