A Georgian weightlifter Lasha Talakhadze, the two-time Olympic and seven-time World and European Champion, has been named the Best Weightlifter of Europe for the third time.
The Georgian Sports Ministry said Talakhadze was awarded at the opening ceremony of the European Weightlifting Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The Georgian athlete was nominated by representatives of the European Weightlifting Federation and International Sports Press Association.
Georgian competitors participating in the Championship include Ramin Shamilishvili and Goderdzi Berdelidze in the 55 kg weight category, Shota Mishvelidze in 61 kg, Goga Chkheidze in 67 kg and Archil Malakmadze in 73 kg, the Ministry said.
Zurab Mskhaladze will face his opponents in 96 kg, while Irakli Chkheidze will compete in 102 kg, Zaza Lomtadze in 109 kg, Mariam Murghvliani in 87 kg, Anastasia Gottfried and Bakari Turmanidze in +87 kg and +109 kg weight categories respectively, the body added.
The competition is taking place through February 20.
