Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili strongly criticized a statement by European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper, who expressed support for Elene Khoshtaria and other “unjustly detained” individuals in Georgia. Papuashvili accused the EU of effectively endorsing political violence by backing figures he claims undermine democratic processes.
He argued that Khoshtaria's actions were politically motivated and aimed at disrupting elections, and said the EU’s support sends a “green light” for such behavior.
Papuashvili also condemned the EU and its institutions for failing to hold violent actors accountable, claiming the EU Embassy in Georgia even funds individuals who incite politically motivated crimes.
“Is this in line with European — or even galactic — values?” he asked, calling the situation a serious failure of EU principles and responsibility.
