Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has warned that political change in Brussels is imminent, claiming that the United States’ latest Security Strategy confirms concerns about the EU’s backsliding on core values. He shared his remarks on social media, emphasizing the risks to Europe’s stability and identity.
Papuashvili stated that without dramatic reforms, the EU risks succumbing to what the U.S. calls “civilizational erasure.” He argued that the Union’s bureaucracy has neglected fundamental European values, citing its approach to Georgia over recent years as an example. According to Papuashvili, this includes support for violence, attempts at regime change, interference with national sovereignty, favoring foreign-funded NGOs over the will of the people, and prioritizing conflict over peace and stability.
He criticized the EU leadership for fostering a systematic crisis that has weakened its global standing, fueled public disillusionment, and deepened cultural and identity tensions across Europe. Papuashvili highlighted that Brussels’ ideologically driven policies, corruption scandals, and confusion over freedom of expression have further alienated citizens and undermined trust in national governments.
“The EU bureaucracy’s short-sighted stance on European values has encouraged traditionalist and patriotic political movements to gain influence,” Papuashvili wrote. He warned that the Union’s current response appears to be denial rather than meaningful action, citing remarks by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas as evidence that Europe’s leadership may not fully recognize the crisis.
Papuashvili concluded by urging Europe to heed the U.S. warning, return to democratic principles reflecting the will of the people, and restore a vision of a united, peaceful, and free Europe, rather than one divided and at odds with itself.
