The Georgian Orthodox Church celebrates November 23 - the day on which St. George was tortured on the wheel.
St. George's Day is celebrated twice in Georgia, on May 6 and November 23. The Church considers St. George to be the patron saint of horsemen, farmers, shepherds, and travelers.
St. George was born in the latter part of the third century AD to a Greek Christian noble family in Cappadocia. During the reign of the Roman emperor Diocletian, he enlisted in the Roman Army. After the persecution of the Christians began, the saint disowned the emperor and was tortured and then beheaded at the age of 30. Among the various torments, he was also put on a wheel. In 303 St. George was beheaded.
