Speaking at a conference marking the 30th anniversary of the Georgian national currency—the Lari—Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili emphasized the currency's significance as both an economic and cultural symbol.
“Our government has played a pivotal role in elevating economic policy and ensuring legal stability,” Papuashvili stated, highlighting the broader framework supporting the national currency.
He stressed that the Georgian Lari (GEL) must remain a dynamic institution, capable of adapting to future challenges and opportunities. “Today, the Lari endures all challenges with dignity and stands as a proud symbol that reflects the dignity, history, and ideology of our nation—in both content and form,” he said.
Papuashvili called for continued innovation in the currency's development, including design updates and the issuance of commemorative banknotes and coins. He praised the National Bank of Georgia for its responsible monetary policy and for maintaining the integrity of the Lari.
“The banking sector, under the leadership of the National Bank, has become one of the pillars of our economy, enhancing trust both domestically and internationally and creating new opportunities for Georgia,” he noted.
Concluding his remarks, Papuashvili extended congratulations on the 30th anniversary of the Lari and expressed hope that future milestones would bring even more pride to the country.
