The Georgian government will implement social protection measures for Levan Ioseliani, the Public Defender, and his 130 office employees, following amendments proposed on March 17.
The cost of one year of social insurance will range from GEL 1,900 to 2,300.
The government emphasized the importance of the Public Defender’s Office in safeguarding human rights, identifying violations, and restoring infringed rights.
The proposed amendment highlights the challenges faced by employees of the Public Defender’s Office, who regularly interact with socially vulnerable individuals, experience psychological stress, and visit institutions where their health and safety may be at risk.
To address these concerns, the draft project suggests additional protective measures and social guarantees to reduce risks of injury or fatality, ultimately improving staff performance and the efficiency of the office.
The explanatory letter for the initiative states, “The introduction of social protection guarantees, including compulsory state insurance for Public Defender Office employees, will foster their motivation and engagement, directly impacting the quality and outcomes of their work.”
