The partner of GDB company, farmer Iva Chkonia, who is engaged in the production of lettuce leaves, started growing watermelons - several types of Spanish Sandissima, which is a portion size, thin-skinned, seedless product with a special taste.
As Iva Chkonia said, they have grown watermelons on half a hectare and the current year is a test year for production.
According to him, at the initial stage, farmers received up to 10 tons of product, which will cost approximately GEL 3 per kilogram in Saburtalo and Goodwill Digomi.
"We, in Georgia, together with our partner Rijk Zwaan, were the first to start growing the Spanish variety Sandissima. We have finished harvesting the first crop and have already brought it to Saburtalo and Goodwill Digomi. The market value is more expensive than the standard one, because we grow them under special conditions, and the price of our seedlings is several times higher than the price of a standard watermelon seedling.
I think the project will be effective. We will observe the species and, taking the sales into account, we will decide which of the varieties to grow. We would like to offer customers a special kind of watermelons from the beginning of June till late August", - Iva Chkhonia noted.
