
Mikheil Chkhenkeli noted that the Hadron Therapy Centre in the Kutaisi International University plays an important role in the development of science in Georgia. According to the Minister, the author of the idea and concept of Kutaisi International University is Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili. It was as a result of his and his family's extremely important charity that a world-wide academic and scientific-research space emerged in the country. The Hadron Therapy Centre is fully funded by the Cartu Foundation. The center will house two cyclotrons, which are being manufactured by one of the world's leading companies (IBA). The first patient will be admitted to the clinic in 2024.
The Minister stressed that the research topics of the Hadron Therapy Center are exactly in line with Horizon Europe's 2030 goals, the priority of which is to fund projects to fight cancer. In this regard, Georgia is given a unique opportunity to become a major participant in studies carried out in medical physics.
The conference held at the Kutaisi International University was also attended by the EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel, the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Carl Hartzell, the Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Nunu Mickiewicz, Head of Horizon Europe National Office in Georgia, Maia Okujava, the representatives of the EU delegation to Georgia, scientific circles and other invited guests.
