At a briefing following the Cabinet meeting, First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Levan Davitashvili, highlighted that Georgia’s strong 9.5% economic growth in 2023 was reflected in employment figures, with record-high employment levels achieved last year.
“It is natural that the economic growth we experienced in 2023 translated into employment gains. Last year, the number of employed individuals increased by nearly 70,000, reaching a record 1,402,000. Additionally, according to fourth-quarter data, the unemployment rate decreased by 2.5 percentage points, reaching 13.9%,” stated Davitashvili.
He acknowledged that, despite improvements, Georgia’s unemployment rate remains high by international standards. However, he emphasized that the progress achieved is significant, with economic growth creating new jobs. The government’s primary objective, he noted, is to ensure increased employment, rising incomes, and fair compensation for workers.
“Our commitment to creating 200,000 jobs over the next four years remains a top priority. Every effort will be focused on ensuring inclusive economic growth that generates employment opportunities. This is our government’s main focus and priority. The opposition, on the other hand, has a different, politically motivated agenda, as the Prime Minister has clearly stated,” Davitashvili added.
As for economic performance in January 2024, preliminary data from the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development indicate continued strong growth.
