The Georgian Dream has nominated Mikheil Kavelashvili as their candidate for president. The announcement was made by Bidzina Ivanishvili, the honorary chairman of the party, during a briefing at the party's central office following a meeting of the majority and the political council.
Kavelashvili, currently a member of Georgia's 11th convocation parliament, previously served as a member of the 9th and 10th convocations. From 2016 to 2020, he represented Tbilisi’s Sanzona district as a single-mandate MP from the Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia bloc, and since 2020, he has represented Nadzaladevi district.
In 2022, Kavelashvili, along with Sozar Subari and Dimitri Khundadze, left Georgian Dream to join the People's Power party, where he currently serves as the political secretary.
Kavelashvili is also a former striker for the Georgian national football team. He played for Dinamo Tbilisi between 1988 and 1995, winning three Georgian championships. He also had stints with clubs such as Manchester City, Grasshopper, Zurich, and Lucerne. Holding both a C-category coaching license from Switzerland and a B-category UEFA coaching license, Kavelashvili founded and became the honorary president of the World Footballers Association (FIFPro) in Georgia in 2009.
Georgia's presidential elections will take place on December 14, with the date confirmed by parliament in a recent plenary session. Under the new constitutional procedure, the president will no longer be elected directly by popular vote but will be chosen by an electoral college. This body will consist of 300 members, including 150 members of parliament, 20 members of the Supreme Council of Abkhazia, 21 members of the Supreme Council of Adjara, and 109 local government representatives.
At least 30 members of the electoral college will have the right to nominate candidates. In the first round, a candidate must receive at least two-thirds of the votes to be elected. If no candidate achieves this, a second round will be held with a simple majority required. Presidential candidates must be Georgian citizens aged 40 or older and have resided in the country for at least 15 years.
