The price of coffee in the world is growing, therefore, coffee imports to Georgia have already increased by 30% annually. Coffee prices rose significantly in February this year, when the international price reached a 10-year high of $ 2.60 per pound. The sharp rise in grain prices started as early as 2021, when the price was in the range of $ 1.25, but in one year, it almost doubled and now reaches $ 2.25.
The current price fluctuations in the international market have also affected Georgia. According to the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), importing coffee from abroad has become more expensive for the country.
In 2022, coffee imports (by volume) increased by 24.7%. In the first 5 months of this year, 2,832 tons of coffee were imported to Georgia, for which we paid $ 9.9 million, and the average price of 1 ton was $ 3,503.
We bought 2,270 tons of coffee last year and paid $ 6.1 million, the average price of 1 ton of coffee was $ 2,704. Consequently, this year's price is 30% higher than that one last year.
The list of Georgia’s 5 largest coffee importers looks like this:
Indonesia - 1,579 tons;
Vietnam - 403 tons;
Russia - 226 tons;
Germany - 155 tons;
Italy - 102 tons.
The increased price of the imported coffee has made the product more expensive in the Georgian market. According to the Geostat data, in May 2022, Georgian consumers increased the price of coffee, tea and cocoa by 16.8% compared to May of the previous year.
