The purchase of chocolate in the international markets became more expensive for Georgia, at the same time, the country reduced the import of chocolate.
According to the data published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), in January-June 2022, 7,940.88 tons of chocolate and other ready-made cocoa-containing food products worth of $ 26,065,790 were imported into the country, which is 20.62% higher in value and volume compared to the same period in 2021, although the quantitative indicator decreased by 2.13%.
In the reporting period, Georgia’s largest importer of the product is Russia, accounting for 52.56% of the chocolate imported and other ready-made food products containing cocoa (in terms of quantity), and Belgium is one of the largest importers, as well.
Georgia is not dependent on the US chocolate market, and the import of chocolate from the US to Georgia is not fixed, but the American producers have already talked about the shortage of chocolate. US chocolate bar maker The Hershey Company said that the US could face shortages of chocolate and sweets starting this fall amid the global supply chain crisis.
