Dmitry Mariyasin, Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, praised Georgia as "one of the leading countries" in meeting environmental obligations, highlighting its "active participation" in UNECE environmental processes and agreements.
"You have made significant strides in environmental protection," Mariyasin stated during a meeting with Otar Shamugia, Georgia’s Minister of Agriculture and Environmental Protection, at the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Shamugia used the occasion to detail the Government’s efforts to address environmental challenges. He noted that monitoring systems had been established to curb air pollution, and reforms to reduce emissions in the industrial sector were already underway.
The Minister also underscored the importance of new legislative measures, including those on Water Resources Management and Industrial Emissions, both of which are aligned with European Union standards. These measures aim to improve natural resource management and reduce pollution.
Mariyasin expressed his continued support for Georgia's commitment to implementing future UNECE recommendations, as stated by the Ministry.
