On May 6, the Georgian Orthodox Church celebrates St. George Day, honoring one of the most revered saints in the country. Festive church services will be held across Georgia in recognition of Saint George, who is considered the nation’s protector and patron.
According to tradition, Saint George was born in Cappadocia to Greek Christian parents and later moved to Lydda with his mother. He served in the Roman army but was martyred in 303 AD for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. His legacy quickly grew, and he became venerated as a Christian martyr.
In Georgia, St. George Day is observed twice annually: on November 23, commemorating his torture, and on May 6, marking the day of his death.
