Georgia celebrates Mother Language Day today

Mother Language Day is celebrated in Georgia on April 14 every year.
This date is associated with the dramatic events of April 14, 1978. Several thousand people on Rustaveli Avenue 42 years ago resisted the will of the Soviet leadership and did not allow the amendment made to Article 78 of the Soviet Constitution, according to which the Georgian language was losing its status as a state language.
As a result of student demonstrations, the Georgian language retained its status as a state language.
