In the 11th month of 2023, Georgia purchased mobile phones worth $247.7 million from foreign countries, which is a record volume of imports. Compared to 2022, this amount is $59 million, or 31% more.
The number of phones is not indicated in the import statistics, although if the average prices were the same as in 2022 ($269 = 724 GEL + 18% VAT = 855 GEL), this means that 921 thousand mobile phones were introduced to the country in 11 months of last year. Accordingly, 24% of the population could buy a phone in 2023.
According to the import statistics, the largest number [63%] of smartphones are imported into Georgia from the United Arab Emirates, which is one of the important centers of the global phone trade, as importers can purchase mobile phones at a more competitive price through the UAE. The Czech Republic ranks 2nd with imports worth $52 million. The third place in the ranking is occupied by Vietnam, which has become one of the largest producers of telephones in recent years.
The countries Georgian mobile phones are imported from are as follows:
1) The United Arab Emirates - $156,408,860;
2) The Czech Republic - $51,945,670;
3) Vietnam - $20,940,540;
4) Hong Kong - $9,446,340;
5) India - $5,630,980.
As for the re-export of mobile phones, smartphones worth $2.9 million were exported from Georgia abroad (mainly to Armenia and Azerbaijan). This figure is five times less than in 2022.
