Georgia added to list of countries from which snails are allowed to be exported to EU market

According to the EU Commission Regulation 2022/34 of 22 December 2021, Georgia has been added to the list of the countries from which snails are allowed to be exported to the EU market. The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia spreads information about it. According to the Ministry, the adoption of this regulation was preceded by the measures taken by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and the National Food Agency to bring it closer to the EU legislation, prepared under the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA).

It is noteworthy that a number of projects promoting the development of snail production in Georgia have been implemented by the Rural Development Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture. In total, 38 loans worth more than 10 million GEL were issued for the creation and development of snail production within the framework of the preferentialAgricultural Credit Project, with co-financing issued by the Rural Development Agency, which amounted to more than 824,000 GEL. In addition, the Georgian honey (from 2016), the Black Sea anchovy (from 2017), pet (dogs, cats) food (from 2020) and certain categories of non-food products (leather, wool) are allowed to be exported from Georgia to the EU market.

It should be noted that in 2021, 173 tons of honey were exported to various markets, including 143 tons were exported to the European countries. The value of the exported honey totaled 657 thousand US dollars. The increase in the value of exports, compared to the same period last year, is 436%, and the volume - 696%, "- the statement reads.
