Late last week, U.S. and NATO commanders announced the launch of operations in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. The purpose of the operations was called "ensuring security and stability in the region."

The USS Mount Whitney is the second Blue Ridge-class command ship, the flagship of the U.S. 6th Fleet. It was put into operation on January 16, 1971.
