
According to the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), in 2021, fish production increased to 2,861.1 tons, while in the previous year this figure was 789.6 tons less - 2,071.5 tons. Accordingly, in 2021, fish production decreased by 38%. According to the data published by the Geostat, the production of the following types of fish increased: carp, sturgeon and catfish. The annual production of these species amounted to 1 414 tons. The production also increased in the salmon species and last year its volume was 1446.7 tons.
According to the regions, Kakheti is the leader in fish production, exceeding 1000 tons last year, followed by Shida Kartli with 851.6 tons, and Guria ranks 3rd with 300.7 tons. In 2021, the area of the fishponds intended for aquaculture was 2,946.2 ha, and the volume of the basins was 30.3 ha. Compared to 2020, the volume of both fishponds and basins has increased.
It should be noted that in 2021, compared to 2020, the export of the Georgian fish decreased. In 2020, the revenues from the export of fresh fish and frozen fish from Georgia exceeded 6 million dollars in total, while in 2021 this figure runs over 2.5 million dollars.
