International Mother Language Day is held on February 21. This day was established by UNESCO in 1999 with the aim of preserving and developing linguistic and cultural diversity. According to UNESCO, about half of the world's 6,000 languages are in danger of extinction in the near future.
International Mother Language Day has been celebrated annually with various events worldwide, since February 2000. International Mother Language Day has been established in Georgia since 2005.
