
The European Commission has reached a preliminary agreement on the recommendation on granting EU candidate status to Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.
According to RFE/RL's Europe Editor Rikard Jozwiak, Ukraine and Moldova will receive the status of EU candidate country along with the mandatory conditions. Georgia will now receive the conditions and the chance to be granted candidate status in the future. The leaders will discuss the issue at a European Council meeting next week.
The European Commission will monitor compliance with the conditions and the initial assessment is expected to be published by the end of the year.
To be informed, the European Commission will issue a recommendation on the applications of Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova today, June 17, after which EU leaders will announce a decision on granting candidate status to the three countries at a summit of the European Council on June 23-24.
