Lawrence Meredith, Director for Neighbourhood East and Institution Building at the European Commission, is visiting Tbilisi, where he said EU financial aid for Georgia should be accompanied by the country’s "clear progress" in reforming the judiciary, public governance, and protection of human rights.
Meredith arrived in Georgia late yesterday with representatives from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank.
He is scheduled to visit the Imereti and Adjara regions of western Georgia with EU Ambassador Carl Hartzell, and meet with beneficiaries of EU-funded projects.
Meredith stated that new projects will be launched during his visit to support business and entrepreneurship in Georgia, ensure internet provision in mountainous parts of the country, and protect the environment.
He stated that the EU is ensuring ‘direct aid’ to the Georgian people around the country.
