According to him, due to the war ongoing in Ukraine, the population had negative expectations and caused a stir. As a result, the Georgian Lari began to depreciate very quickly. The expert explained that based on the recent data, there was no reason for the GEL to start depreciating.
"The GEL began to depreciate very quickly, but yesterday, when the National Bank took the first counter-step and offered 50 million USD at the foreign exchange auction, we saw that there was no need to use this amount in full. Only 39.5 million USD was sold. The GEL exchange rate has stabilized and started to strengthen. I do not rule out that it will be further strengthened in the near future.
Within the previous months and days, we had no reason for the GEL to start depreciating, because we had adequate tax rates, good inflow in part of the currency transfers; compared to the previous year, in January-February, we saw a fairly high growth rate in exports," - said Anguridze.
