In March, fruits, nuts and vegetables only worth of $ 0.8 million were exported from Georgia to Russia, which is the lowest figure for the same month since the 2014 embargo was lifted. The portal EastFruit predicts further decline in exports associating it with the war ongoing in Ukraine and sanctions imposed against Russia.
On an annual basis, the volume of exports on all major horticultural products to Russia fell. Compared to March 2021, Russians bought apples worth of less than about $ 0.9 million, nuts worth of less than $ 1 million and potatoes worth of less than $ 0.2 million. The volume of exports of herbs also fell by 4%, while the peak month of exports of this product is March. In general, herbs are a key product in the export of Georgian fruits and vegetables, especially to Russia.
EastFruit emphasizes that March is not the main export period and much more products are exported to Russia in the second half of the year. This is the period, when the export of blueberries, peaches, nuts, apples and mandarins begins in Georgia.
